The Energy Institute at Colorado State University

Powering a World of Better Energy

The Energy Institute at Colorado State University ( www.energy.colostate.edu ) is a pioneering interdisciplinary program dedicated to developing new approaches to energy by supporting discovery, innovation, and education.

Energy is central to nearly every major challenge and opportunity the world faces today.  Colorado State University is well positioned to contribute at every level with real-world impact.

This cross-campus, interdisciplinary research department is operated under the Office of the Vice President for Research. The extensive network of researchers, research programs, and centers spans all eight colleges at CSU, and extends off campus to a global network of public and private partners. The Institute facilitates network growth, promotes energy research and education, and facilitates commercialization efforts.

The Energy Institute employs four key strategies to achieve its goals:

Provide opportunities:
In support of the mission of Colorado State University, the Institute provides opportunities to students and faculty for conducting transformative energy research.  These include:

  • Research initiation grants
  • Proposal support and post-award management
  • Access to a global network of industrial and governmental partners
  • Thought-provoking courses and degree programs

Foster linkages
The Institute promotes and maintains critical connections between Colorado State University and public, industry, and government stakeholders. This network includes small companies and large multi-national corporations; local, state and national governments; and researchers at other universities in the US and abroad.  The Institute sponsors important international events and research symposia, attracting world-class thought leaders to campus.

Serve as an innovation portal
The Institute is a two-way conduit for innovative energy research.  In addition to providing support for the groundbreaking work carried out in the CSU ecosystem, the Institute’s infrastructure encourages engagement with the global energy community.

Facilitate large-scale application:
The Energy Institute, working closely with CSU Ventures, brings innovations and technologies to market by helping researchers and partners navigate intellectual property rights, licensing, and entrepreneurship.
The breadth of the Institute is embodied by an impressive array of associated centers within Colorado State:

  • Engines and Energy Conversion Lab
  • Center for the New Energy Economy
  • Electric Power Systems Lab
  • Center for Next Generation Photovoltaics
  • Sustainable Biofuels Development Center
